Taking photos of nocturnal flying squirrels in a nocturnal way. It may seem obvious, but it's precisely because they are nocturnal that they are interesting. The behavioral patterns of wild animals and the camera, a mechanism that can capture them well. If these two things don't go well, you won't be able to capture them in a photo.
I was born with the ability to observe nature and have a wild instinct, but I'm really bad with mechanics. In the world of mechanics, I have no choice but to open my computer and rely on Google and YouTube. I'm not very good at it, but flying squirrels are nocturnal. When I try to capture that light, that darkness, that movement, the performance of the camera and lens is very important and big.
In my opinion, flying squirrels are money-eating (animals) and cost 100,000 yen per minute. That's because, if they come out of their burrows 10 minutes earlier at dusk, you can take pictures with any camera. But if they're 10 minutes later, it's so dark that you need a bright lens and a bright camera to get the picture in focus. So, flying squirrels cost 100,000 yen per minute. If you were to buy 10 minutes with money, you could take pictures with a 1 million yen lens and camera. Such is the daily life of nocturnal flying squirrels. What kind of guys...
However, I don't have enough training to have such a good camera, so every day is a training. It's a trial and error day. That's what makes it fun. (I'm confident!) lol
Recently, I've been going there by myself for fun, and it's a very peculiar place: a one-shot flying squirrel challenge. This is a burrow of a Siberian cherry tree that I entered by chance recently, and two or three flying squirrels return before sunrise at almost the usual time. It's quite dark here, too. But the morning glow in the background is fascinating. There's something cute about the flying squirrels gliding back to their burrows, as if to escape the sun.
This morning, I woke up naturally at 6:10. Looking outside, it was sunny and the eastern sky was orange. I got in the car almost in my pajamas thinking I still had time. As I watched the dawn at minus 6 degrees, I only thought about the one chance I had in the morning.
It's a very reckless place to take guests, and if you don't get a photo of the flying squirrels in flight, you'll only get to see them for two seconds. You'll be watching a pitch black, dumpling-shaped flying squirrel eating a Japanese elm branch from the top of a tree far, far away, and the moment you think it's moving, it'll dive into its hole faster than you can blink. You can predict its gliding course, but you only get two chances (two squirrels). If you bring guests here, you'll probably end up not even taking a single photo. That's the kind of place it is.
Of course, if a customer really wants to try flying squirrels, I'll take them on one condition, but it's better not to. So I only go alone when I'm alone. My camera is an Olympus OM1-m2 with a 40-150mm f2.8 lens, which is a pretty bright combination, but it's still too dark to take pictures of flying squirrels gliding in the dark. All I can do now is hope that they'll take their time and come back for at least a minute.
The flying squirrels here have yet to come back, but when the snow falls lightly, they will act as a reflector, which gives us a considerable advantage. And today, an interesting lens arrived. This and another reckless challenge will be fun.
Olympus 45mm F1.2. A used one at Map Camera costs 110,000 yen. I guess this is how people get sucked into the camera swamp...
